Microsoft acknowledges Windows 10 bug that causes internet connectivity problems

Facepalm: Things that are certain in life: death, taxes, and Windows 10 updates that cause bugs. Once again, Microsoft has acknowledged a problem in the May 2020 update. The error affects the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) icon in the taskbar, showing a user to be offline even when there is a connection—and that can confuse some apps. The Windows 10 May 2020 update was found on 7 percent of all PCs at the start of the month. While it’s landing on computers at a faster rate than previous updates, it’s not without its problems. As reported by Windows Latest, cumulative updates in June and July have helped, but some users still see a yellow triangle in the NCSI and the “no internet access” message. Despite what Windows might say, those affected by the problem aren’t actually offline. It’s still possible to load up a browser and surf the web as normal, but apps that rely on Windows 10’s internet status to make a connection are unlikely to work. These include Cortana, Micr

Once a blue always a blue. “However, I’

Senior doctors urge Britons to wear face masks and stick to social distancing to prevent second wave

A second wave of coronavirus will cause more suffering than the first, according to Professor Carrie MacEwen, chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges A second wave of coronavirus will cause more suffering than the first if Britons don’t stick to social distancing and wear face masks, according to the UK’s top doctors.  Leading medics believe there will be a deadly resurgence of Covid-19 during the colder months, amid claims the virus will find it easier to survive and spread because people spend more time indoors. They say this, combined with a seasonal flu outbreak and a huge backlog of patients waiting for treatment due to delays during the coronavirus pandemic, could ‘devastate’ an already-stretched NHS. Professor Carrie MacEwen, chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, said medics and healthcare workers were ‘totally reliant on the public understanding that this has certainly not disappeared and could come back and cause even more suffering for the populat

Japan: Child Abuse in Pursuit of Olympic Medals

(Tokyo) – Child athletes in Japan suffer physical, sexual, and verbal abuse when training for sport, Human Rights Watch said in a new report, released today, that documents depression, suicides, physical disabilities, and lifelong trauma resulting from the abuse. Japan will host the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics beginning July 23, 2021. The 67-page report, “‘I Was Hit So Many Times I Can’t Count’: Abuse of Child Athletes in Japan,” documents Japan’s history of corporal punishment in sport – known as taibatsu in Japanese – and finds child abuse in sports training throughout Japanese schools, federations, and elite sports. In interviews and a nationwide online survey, Japanese athletes from more than 50 sports reported abuses that included being punched in the face, kicked, beaten with objects like bats or bamboo kendo sticks, being deprived of water, choked, whipped with whistles or racquets, and being sexually abused and harassed. “For decades, children in Japan have b

Adam Glanzman | Bloomberg | Getty Images With the coronavirus pandemic exacerbating a slowdown in the global economy, governments around the world may have no choice but to increase spending to support businesses and households well into the next year, according to an economist from S&P Global Ratings. Many governments have announced large amounts of fiscal support in the wake of the pandemic. But some countries, including the U.S., have shown “a degree of fiscal fatigue” and are considering rolling back some of the stimulus, said Shaun Roache, the ratings agency’s chief economist for Asia Pacific. “We’re seeing some fiscal policymakers think about pulling back some of their measures or maybe letting them expire without renewing them, and that’s quite a dangerous thing to do when
