Covid-19 advisor warns against ‘rushing’ the re-opening of sports stadia

A leading psychology professor who advises the Scottish government on their Covid-19 response has warned that “rushing” fans back to global sporting events will create “eerie half-realities” of events that may risk a second spike in the infection.

There are plans to host limited amounts of spectators at major events such as the French Open and English Premier League from September while some fans have already been re-admitted to Japanese baseball games as well as top flight football matches in that country and Denmark.

But University of St Andrews professor Stephen Reicher told SNTV that while accommodating restricted crowds at outdoor events is “relatively speaking not a major problem”, this is complicated by risk factors such as singing and hugging in the stands as well as crowding on public transport and bars around arenas.

Reicher advised that a country’s Covid-19 infection level needs to be around one new case per million inhabitants per day in order to consider allowing fans back into stadia. An efficient test and trace system is also a pre-requisite.

The professor, who sits on the Scottish Government Covid-19 Advisory Group, also warned that the coronavirus pandemic is in its “early stages” and only the “global eradication of this virus” would allow events such as next year’s Olympic Games to safely welcome fans from across the world.

He also called on sports clubs and players to help advocate for a “reconfiguring” of supporter behaviour, such as social distancing and mask wearing, in order to ensure a safe re-opening of sports events.

High-profile Twitter accounts including Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Uber and Apple have been hacked in an internal breach that is believed to be one of the largest social media attacks ever.
